Sweden NATO membership status - Historical Timeline

Official audit log and status changelog documenting Sweden's NATO alignment.

As of October 21, 2026, the verified NATO membership status of Sweden is Official member state.

Official member state

CURRENT / VERIFIED

Sweden formally concluded its accession process on March 7, 2024, by officially depositing its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the United States Government in Washington, D.C. Sweden became the 32nd allied member of NATO.

Sweden now participates fully under Article 5 collective defense guarantees and within all NATO decision-making bodies.

Accession Process & Ratification

TRANSITION PHASE

Following a historic security policy recalibration triggered by the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sweden submitted its formal letter of application to join NATO on May 18, 2022.

Accession protocols were signed at NATO Headquarters in July 2022. The formal transition concluded after all 31 existing allied parliaments ratified Sweden's membership protocol.

Non-member state

SUPERSEDED

For more than two centuries, Sweden maintained a doctrine of military non-alignment during peacetime and neutrality in wartime. Sweden declined founding NATO membership in 1949.

While maintaining non-member status throughout this era, Sweden joined NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) program in 1994 and routinely contributed to NATO-led peacekeeping missions.
